First snowflakes possible tomorrow
Posted on October 29, 2020 at 1:00 PM

1PM Tuesday

A storm moving through the region will persist this evening and overnight. The storm will begin to clear out tomorrow morning, likely tapering off by noon. This storm will continue to produce rain, but cold air behind the storm will likely cause the rain to mix with or change to snow for a few hours.

At this time, the best chance for snow will be after 5AM or 6AM. Any snow accumulations will depend on exactly how much temperatures fall. Currently, temperatures are likely to fall to 33 to 35 degrees. This would support a about three hours of wet snowflakes. If there is any snow accumulation during this time, it is likely to be less than half an inch. However, if tempertures remain a degree or two warmer, we likely won't see any snowflakes. Conversely, any colder and the time-window for snow would be slightly longer enabling greater accumulations. This will be the case in the higher terrain past Woodstock and the Ashokan Reservoir where an inch or so of accumulation is possible.

As far as potential impacts go…
No notable impacts are currently anticipated. Temperatures tomorrow morning will only support very wet snowflakes that should melt on contact with most surfaces. The only surfaces that are likely to be cold enough to support a light coating of snow are car windshields and roofs. In the snowiest scenario, a coating on fallen leaves or grass would be possible. In the least snow scenario, no snow will fall due to the storm ending before temperatures cool enough. No road accumulations or black ice are anticipated. If any snow does stick tomorrow, it will almost certainly melt by early afternoon as temperatures rise to near 40. A full update be posted on Sunday when KingstonSnows officially kicks off its winter season.
