5:00PM Wednesday

The current cold spell will peak tonight.

As of 5PM temperatures across Ulster County are in the lower teens across the valley areas, and in the single digits across the higher elevations. Temperatures will fall throughout the overnight hours. 8AM temperatures tomorrow will likely range from -5 to 5 degrees across the county. With light winds factored in, temperatures in Kingston at 8AM may feel as low as -10… higher elevations will be colder.

Due to the cold, it is likely that some districts across Ulster County …namely Saugerties, Ellenville, Rondout, or Marlboro… may issue delayed openings tomorrow. This was the case exactly one year ago when these four districts issued delays due to a nearly identical temperature forecast. Cold-related delays were also issued on January 22, 2014 for similar conditions. Here in Kingston… there is no record of a delay being issued only for cold temperatures within the last ten years… it is not likely at all that Kingston will issue a delay. In New Paltz… policy states that delays are issued when the temperature falls below -15, or the windchill is below -25 degrees… New Paltz will not come close to these values.

There is the possibility of light snow early Friday morning… will have an update on that tomorrow evening, if needed.
