A tricky scenario regarding Thursday's storm is developing as it now appears that enough cool air will be in place at the onset of the storm to result in some mixed precipitation.

Precipitation will develop around, or just before midnight tonight. Temperatures will be running around 34 degrees at the time, so there may be an initial period of rain showers, but this should transition over to all frozen precipitation by 3am.

The overnight low temperature of 31 degrees will actually not occur until 6 or 7 am. It is at this point in time when we should be experiencing the most steady precipitation associated with this storm. Between 3am and 8am we will be dealing with a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. However, because of the mix, it appears that significant accumulations of either will be nearly non-existent in the Kingston area. The more snow-prone areas out towards Tillson and Rifton may see slightly more in the way of accumulation.

That being said, even if there is no significant accumulation, several hours of mixed precipitation leading up to the morning commute may still result in slick travel conditions.

Mixed precipitation will quickly transition over to rain showers between 8am and 9am. Showers may linger throughout the day.

A winter weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight until noon Thursday. A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads, and use caution while driving.

A second system will impact the area in a similar manner Thursday night into Friday morning. However, I will wait until later tonight to start discussing this system.

Based on the current National Weather Service forecast forecast, there is a 30% chance of a two-hour delay for the KCSD on Thursday. An update will be posted by 6pm, with any additional adjustments to take place by 10pm if needed.

Next Update:
6PM Wednesday.
