August 1

On August 1,1983, President Ronald Reagan arrived at Andrews Air Force base. Just ten minutes after the landing, a wind gust of 149 mph in a microburst was recorded. Planes have been known to crash due to such high velocity wind gusts. A fortunate outcome to a possibly disasterous day.

Millons of people around the globe found themselves looking skyward as a spectacular solar eclipse unfurled on August 1, 2008. The eclipse, which was the first since 2006, was visible throughout all of Europe, Asia, and parts of Canada as far south as New Brunswic.
