Christmas 2002 and post New Year's 2003 Snowstorms

Kingston: 11" Christmas morning through 930a 12/26
Kingston: ~16+" New Year's storm

Unprecedented back to back snowstorms buried parts of the Northeast during the Christmas and New Years 2002-2003 holiday season. Both storms produced over 20 inches of snow in Albany. This is only the second time in the past 150 plus years that the area has had two 20 inch storms in a single season. The other winter was the winter of 1887-1888, but in that winter, the storms were separated by several months. During the Fall and early Winter an active subtropical jet stream had helped produced an active storm track up the Atlantic Seaboard.

Snow began early on Christmas morning in eastern New York and western New England. Through most of the morning it was relatively light, but as the day went on the snow picked up in intensity. The storm was characterized by a band of very heavy snow which produced snowfall rates of up to 4 and 5 inches an hour. Over two feet accumulated in areas west of Albany. What made the storm truly amazing was that most of the snow accumulated in a 12 hour period. There was some blowing and drifting of the snow, especially in outlying areas. The storm was the 9th largest of all time, and 4th greatest December storm.

On New Year's Day, a fairly heavy mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow coated the region, causing up to half an inch of ice to coat many objects. That storm had barely departed when another coastal storm developed. This storm produced similar snowfalls as the Christmas storm, but the snow occurred over a period of 24 to 36 hours. There were periods of very heavy snow. The storm was the tenth greatest of all time, and the second greatest January storm. The weight of the snow, combined with the ice already coated trees and power lines, brought large limbs and some power lines down. The result was up to 15,000 customers without power.
